Frequently Asked Questions

How long does each session take?

  • Individual intake sessions are 60 minutes and individual follow-up sessions are approximately 45 minutes.

  • Couples intakes can be done in 3 - 90 minute sessions or one intensive 4 to 5 hour block. This process includes an initial couples information gathering session, 2- 45 minute individual sessions and then a second 90 minute session to review findings and set treatment goals/plans

How do I get started?

I typically set up a free 10-15 minute phone consultation to see if I am a good fit for your therapeutic needs. Please email me at marciburroughs@itherapymail.com and include your best times and a good phone number to call.

How do I know if I should do individual or couples therapy?

As a general rule, I recommend couples therapy for most sexual concerns. Even if you think it is an individual problem, it is usually impacting the relationship and impacted by the relationship. However, we can discuss your particular case during the initial 15 minute phone consultation and I can give you more individualized advice on which may be the best choice for you.

Do you do in person visits?

I do not do any in person visits at this time and do not plan on doing so in the foreseeable future.

What are your payment options?

I am private/self pay. I accept all major credit cards including HSA cards. I will keep a credit card on file and bill you the morning of your appointment.

What about using my insurance/why don’t you take insurance?

I choose not to work with insurance companies because of the constraints placed on the therapy sessions. Insurance companies often try to dictate the length, frequency and modality of treatment, rather than having this be driven by clinical necessity, clinical judgment and client preference. I am also uncomfortable with the potential for confidentiality issues since release of records is often required when insurance is used.

Upon request, I can provide a superbill to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement, if you have out of network benefits. It is important to be aware that if you choose to use your out of network benefits, your records may be requested and if they audit your case and deem that services were not warranted or covered, they could "claw back" your benefits requiring you to reimburse them the monies they paid out to you. I limit my involvement with insurance companies to providing the superbill and do not participate or assist in audits. Clients with HRA/FSA/HSA accounts can use those funds for payment. Clients should verify their out of network benefits and consider the potential issues before using them.

What is your cancellation policy??

I require 24 hours notice for cancellations or I charge full fee for the session. This is because I can't offer that time to others if you have that time slot and do not use it.
