Marci Burroughs, PhD, CST AASECT Certified Sex Therapist

M arci Burroughs, PhD, CST:

Intensives and therapy for helping couples navigate mismatched desire and reignite intimacy.

My educational and previous work background:

I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and my master's and doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi. I completed my doctoral internship at the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s Student Counseling Center. After finishing my PhD, I worked at the University of Tennessee Counseling Center for over 15 years, starting as a Staff Psychologist and later becoming the Associate Director and Director of Clinical Services.

My specialities, certifications and advanced trainings and how I apply them to my therapeutic style:

I am a licensed psychologist with many years of experience working with individuals and couples navigating concerns related to sexuality, relationships, trauma, and identity. Over time, I recognized how important it was to pursue advanced, specialized training in sex therapy in order to effectively address the emotional, relational, and physiological aspects of sexual health. I therefore completed an AASECT-endorsed training program and became an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist (CST).

In addition to my sex therapy training, I am EMDR trained, ACT trauma trained, and have completed Gottman Level 3 training. I draw from these approaches frequently in my work. EMDR and ACT interventions can be particularly helpful in healing sexual trauma and addressing the messages many of us have internalized about ourselves, our bodies, gender roles, and sexuality. Because many concerns that arise in sex therapy relate back to the relationship, I also lean on my Gottman training to assess the foundation of the relationship and help couples strengthen connection, communication, and emotional safety.

My practice is exclusively telehealth and focuses on both individuals and couples/intimate partners experiencing concerns related to sex, sexual dysfunction, trauma and sexual abuse, sexuality, relationships, communication, and gender identity. I specialize in helping couples navigate intimacy and communication challenges including conflict management, decreases in intimacy, mismatched libidos, the impact of societal and religious messaging about sexuality, and the ways trauma can affect both the individual and the relationship. I also work with individuals and couples experiencing sexual dysfunctions such as erectile dysfunction (ED), premature ejaculation (PE), delayed ejaculation (DE), and genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder.

I provide a non-judgmental and affirming space for people who identify as LGBTQ+, polyamorous, consensually non-monogamous, and kink-identified to explore concerns within the context of their identities and relationships.

I also take a neurodivergence-affirming approach in my work. Through both professional and lived experience, I understand how neurodivergence—including ADHD, autism, and other differences in neurotype—can shape communication styles, emotional processing, sensory experiences, and relationship dynamics. Rather than viewing these differences as deficits, I help individuals and couples better understand them and develop strategies that support connection, intimacy, and mutual understanding.

I frequently work with couples where one or both partners identify as autistic, ADHD, or otherwise neurodivergent, particularly when these differences impact communication, intimacy, or emotional connection. In these situations, therapy often focuses on helping partners understand one another’s experiences more clearly, reduce misinterpretations, and develop ways of relating that work for both people.

My goal is to help individuals and couples build relationships—including sexual relationships—that feel more connected, authentic, and sustainable.

Because my practice is fully telehealth, I am able to work with individuals and couples located throughout Tennessee and other PSYPACT participating states.

My Licensure and Certification to practice across states:

I am a licensed psychologist in Tennessee and Florida and hold Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology (PSYPACT), allowing me to provide telehealth services to clients in participating states. Click here to link to the Psypactmap.

A little about me personally:

I grew up in a combination of New York and South Florida. When I am not working I enjoy traveling, yoga, weight lifting, long walks, playing the drums, listening to music and time with my daughters, partner and dog Tito.
